The sky opened up and poured buckets of rain on the Atlanta-metro area but that didn’t stop the thousands of individuals with tickets to A Night of Classic Soul from descending upon Wolf Creek Amphitheater last Saturday. The musical menu for this highly anticipated All White Affair themed concert included the legendary Isley Brothers, another legend – Mr. Freddie Jackson – the amazing award-winning songbird, Chante Moore, and Ruben Studdard, our Velvet Teddy Bear. Hosted by MC Lightfoot with music by DJ Jelly, the event did not disappoint the over 5,100 music lovers whose excitement level steadily increased as each performer did what they do best!
Grammy nominated Ruben Studdard opened up the show like the soulful boss who won the second season of American Idol in 2003. He sang a few of his new songs, from his upcoming album, When Love Calls Me and, of course, he belted out several fan-faves. His next album will be released on October 28, 2016.
Award–winning R&B and jazz singer, songwriter, and actress Chante Moore continued the energetic musical trend set by Studdard with her mesmerizing performances which included “Chanté’s Got a Man”. To the delight of one of her male fans, she sang “Baby Can I Touch Your Body” after having him join her on stage. And, of course, the crowd got quieter as she showcased her high octave levels with “It’s Alright”.
The legendary Freddie Jackson took fans back to his 1985 platinum selling debut album with the hit single, “You are My Lady” which was number one on the R&B charts for two weeks and peaked at #12 on the Hot 100. Attendees gently swayed and sang along as the veteran sang “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)”, another hit from his first album which secured him a Grammy nomination and topped the R&B Albums chart for 14 consecutive weeks.
Naturally, the Isley Brothers performed the hit title track from their platinum-selling 22nd album, Between the Sheets, “Fight the Power”, and their 1974 cover of “Summer Breeze” originally by the soft rock duo Seals and Crofts. The 75-year old Ron Isley showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon and definitely owned the stage while his younger brother, Ernie, continuously captivated the audience with his noted guitar skills.
