2018 AAMBC AWARDS WILL HONOR LITERARY POWERHOUSE COUPLE, ASHLEY & JAQUAVIS COLEMAN
Black Writers Weekend + AAMBC Literary Awards
the tenth annual AAMBC Literary Awards will be held in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday, June 9, 2018. The featured highlight is the Urban Classic Honor for The Cartel series, being presented to acclaimed husband and wife duo, Ashley and JaQuavis Coleman. AAMBC creator, Tamika Newhouse says, “It is a dream to honor Ashley and JaQuavis and to bring them to the show’s home of Atlanta, GA. Honoring this couple is necessary for the African American community, because of what they represent. They defeated all the odds and excelled in many ways that gives black creatives hope to continue to create.”
After previous successful years, Newhouse extended the award show to include a full weekend, entitled the Black Writer’s Weekend. The entire weekend is filled with panels, workshops and a private movie screening, with the formal awards gala positioned as the highlight of the weekend. “We have panels on breaking into screenwriting for TV and film, a relationship panel especially for women, a free conference called CreativeCon, and our celebratory book bash. This weekend was designed specifically for readers and writers of all genres, genders and ages,” Newhouse says. “We wanted this to be a true celebration of literary achievement in every area imaginable.”
In addition to honoring Ashley and JaQuavis Coleman, Newhouse selected Wahida Clark as this year’s recipient for the Francis Ray Trailblazer Award. Some of this year’s nominees include: Regina R. Robertson of Essence Magazine, Enitan Bereola, OWN’s Queen Sugar, screenwriter Lena Waithe, Glory Edim of Well Read Black Girl, and author, Angie Thomas.
