I didn’t expect to be awaken to so much wrong…. In all the right ways. When you began to understand the world we live in, it’s definitely knowing exactly who we turn to get the best information on how to eat and live healthy. What the Health? Is a documentary directed and produced by Kip Anderson, that dives into the world of the health industry as well as foundations that promote health. What was inadvertently uncovered in the documentary is that the industries that we advocate for the wellness of others (i.e. American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association) is sponsored by the industries that produce “unhealthy” foods. It was revealed that processed meat (deli meats, meats processed with additives, etc.) have been categorized as a Category 1 Carcinogen, putting it in the same league as cigarettes, which has had a sharp fall in sales due to the same reason.
As the documentary digs deeper into the web, it further shows that when it comes to getting answers, more questions emerge. Between the push-backs put in by these foundations as well as the proven facts given, I have to say, it has been thinking about my dependence in consuming meat in general. As a diabetic myself, I know it’s important to look at all avenues involving eating healthier.
After truly looking at this film, it has allowed me to think about ways to lessen my consumption of meat. Will I give up meat? Probably not even with the studies given. I’ve eaten it all my life and while the documentary promotes veganism, I like my chicken and steak. What it’s made me aware of watching how much I eat of these foods and increase my consumption or fruits and vegetables. I’ve been making a conscious awareness to eat more of anyway. With the studies still shown to be controversial for many reasons, one things or sure; it will make you think on what are you eating.
